The U.S. and U.K. have sought observer status in the fledgling Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS), an initiative of the Indian Navy to bring together littoral states in the region to arrive at a common understanding of regional maritime environment.
The move by the two countries came after a similar request by China was pending, Indian Naval officials said even as United Arab Emirates decided to host the second IONS in March 2010.
